Some apps can't see 64-bit programs, others can't see the new outlook because they are looking for older versions. Chrl+Alt+S to open the send and receive dialog. Select the S/R group and click Edit. Is the AOL and Gmail accounts enabled for SR? It's my experience with gmail, that it will sometimes check automatically, other times it won't until I view the inbox, then it works the rest of the day.

I went to the default programs dialog within Control Panel. Outlook does not show up in the program list. When I go to 'associate a file type or protocol to a program' and select the MAILTO protocol, it shows 'Not Selected' and when I click on 'Change Program', Outlook doesn't show up in the list.
